A dependant is:

  • your husband, wife or civil partner; or
  • your unmarried or same-sex partner; or
  • your child aged under 18 years old.

Your dependant children can be over 18 years old if they are in the UK now as dependants.

If you are the partner or dependent child under 18 of a migrant who is in or coming to the UK as Tier 4 General Student, you can apply for a visa to join them in the UK. The Home Office, UKBA will grant leave in line with the expiry date of the Tier 4 General Student's visa.

Entry Clearance As / Switching Into Dependants of Government Sponsored Tier 4 General Students

You can be the family member of a Tier 4 (General) applicant where they are applying for, or have been granted, entry clearance, leave to enter, or leave to remain in the United Kingdom as a Tier 4 (General) Student if the Tier 4 (General) applicant is a government sponsored student who is applying for, or who has been granted, entry clearance or leave to remain to undertake a course of study longer than six months. 

To switch into PBS dependant of Tier 4 General student, you must not have:

  • leave to enter or remain as a visitor; or
  • temporary admission or temporary release.

Entry Clearance As / Switching Into Dependants of Tier 4 Students With Post Graduate Course

You can be the family member of a Tier 4 (General) applicant where they are applying for, or have been granted, entry clearance, leave to enter, or leave to remain in the United Kingdom as a Tier 4 (General) Student if the Tier 4 (General) applicant is:

  1. applying for, or has been granted entry clearance or leave to remain in order to undertake a course of study at post-graduate level for 12 months or longer; and
  2. is sponsored by a sponsor who is a Recognised Body or a body in receipt of funding as a higher education institution from either:
      • the Department for Employment and Learning in Northern Ireland;
      • the Higher Education Funding Council for England;
      • the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales; or
      • the Scottish Funding Council;

To switch into PBS dependant of Tier 4 General student, you must not have:

  • leave to enter or remain as a visitor; or
  • temporary admission or temporary release.

Entry Clearance As / Switching Into Dependants of Tier 4 General Students On Doctorate Extension Scheme

You can be the family member of a Tier 4 (General) applicant where they are applying for, or have been granted, entry clearance, leave to enter, or leave to remain in the United Kingdom as a Tier 4 (General) Student if the Tier 4 (General) applicant is applying for, or has been granted leave to remain as a Tier 4 (General) Student on the doctorate extension scheme.

To switch into PBS dependant of Tier 4 General student, you must not have:

  • leave to enter or remain as a visitor; or
  • temporary admission or temporary release.

Extension Of Stay As Dependant Of Tier 4 General Student

You can be the family member of a Tier 4 (General) applicant where they are applying for, or have been granted, entry clearance, leave to enter, or leave to remain in the United Kingdom as a Tier 4 (General) Student if the following conditions are met:

  1. the Tier 4 (General) applicant is applying for entry clearance , leave to enter, or leave to remain, to undertake a course of study that is longer than six months and    either:
        • has entry clearance, leave to enter, or leave to remain as a Tier 4 (General) Student or as a student to undertake a course of study longer than six months ; or
        • last had entry clearance, leave to enter, or leave to remain within the three months preceding the application as a Tier 4 (General) Student or as a student to undertake a course of study longer than six months; and
  2. You (the family member) must either-
        • have entry clearance, leave to enter, or leave to remain as a family member of a Tier 4 (General) Student or a student with entry clearance, leave to enter, or leave to remain, to undertake a course of study longer than six months; or
        • have last had entry clearance, leave to enter, or leave to remain within the three months preceding the application as the family member of a Tier 4 (General) Student or as a student to undertake a course of study longer than six months; and
  3. the Tier 4 (General) applicant Migrant and you (the family member) must be applying at the same time.

Funds For Maintenance

One of the requirements for family members of Points Based System Migrants is that he/she must be able to support themselves without recourse to public funds. This requirement is satisfied by showing funds for maintenance for last 28 days before the date of the application.

The money that your family members will need to show depends on your own circumstances as a Tier 4 General student, including:

  • the length of your course;
  • where you will be studying; and
  • whether you are currently studying or have recently studied in the UK.

Your family members (or you) must have enough money to cover their monthly living costs. Your family member may have to pay a lower amount of living costs if you are applying having completed a course, or are about to complete a course of study in the United Kingdom that was at least six months long in the past four months.  If your family member does not have enough money and cannot prove it, their application will be refused.

The amount of money that your family members (or you) will need to show (as well as the money you must show to cover your own living costs in the United Kingdom) is:
